Tunxi Old Street is an ancient Western-European architect once visited the old street and said that he had found "The Eastern Ancient Rome." First built over 700 years ago, during the Song Dynasty (960-1279), the street is flanked by some buildings from this period. More noticeable are the buildings from the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368-1911), during which time the "Tunxi Old Street" became a distribution center for goods and materials to Huizhou.
The street is 1.5 kilometers long and 7 meters wide. There are long lines of shops along two sides of the street. They are all made of brick and wood and have double floors in Ming-and-Qing-Dynasty style. Most of the buildings are only three stories high, stone-based and brick-laid. They are decorated with small green tiles, wood carvings in the Hui style, ancient shop signs, and red-lacquered with double eaves on the roofs. They are simple and elegant, magnificent and clean. The street is regarded as the living picture of Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival. So far, over 100 movies have been shot in the old street. Here you can buy featured souvenirs such as traditional Chinese medicine, Qimen Black Tea, Anhui ink stick, Shexian ink stone and Anhui Four Carvings.
Situated in the center of Huangshan city, Tunxi Old Street, or Tunxi Ancient Street is a historic commercial street flanked by traditional Hui-style houses. Today, the houses are either well-preserved or renovated in the old style, making the street a popular and picturesque tourist site.
Highlights and Travel Tips
Although the old houses along the street make for a good photo opportunity, like many other old streets in China, Tunxi Old Street is more like a shopping place for tourists. Most houses are used as shops, restaurants, and guesthouses. While touristy and crowded, this picturesque street is still interesting for an afternoon stroll, to pick up souvenirs and sample local snacks and food.
While strolling down the street, you will find shops selling calligraphy and other art materials, wood carvings, tea, snacks, etc. Some shops demonstrate how local food is produced in traditional ways and encourage passers-by to taste it. Some even let you try your hands at making their craft, like Chinese calligraphy brushes. Shops along the street are somewhat repetitive, with the advantage that you can compare prices before deciding where to buy.
At the western end of the old street, there is an ancient bridge, named Zhenhai, which was originally built in 1536 and deserves a quick visit.

The other is the first private museum of ancient architectural style-Wancuilou.

Such as Huizhou ink stick plays an important role in our country’s ink-stick-making industry. It is named so because it originates in ancient Huizhou.
